Hi,

I need a recommendation for a 1 day (easy) hike in the Jotunheimen area. We will be driving on route 55 from Gapune to Lom, and will have a few hours for the hike. We are only reasonably fit and we are looking for a circular hike, that will get us back to our Car within a few hours.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Koby

Thanks for your quick reply.

Do you have some more specific details about the hike (the website has very little info in English)?

How long is the hike from Turtagrø to Fannaråkhytta? And back? What is the difficulty level of the hike? Do you need equipment for the hike?

Thanks,

Koby

About 4,5 hours up and 3,5 hours back down again (according to the web pages). If you want to make a round trip it'll take 4,5 hours back, making it a total of 9 hours. This estimated times are based on average walking speed. You might do it a lot faster, or a lot slower, depending on how fit you are.

The path to Fanaråken is quite steep so I would recommend good walking boots. Since the summit is above 2000 meters you would be well prepared to include clothes suitable for winter conditions. With an average temperature of just a few degrees above 0 (celsius) during August, snow can fall at any date. And I wouldn't recommend this trip to unexperienced hikers if the weather is bad.

Since I don't think this trip is what you'd call "easy" and "a few hours", I don't think I would recommend it for you. I'm sure somebody else can suggest nice round trips elsewhere near route 55, unfortunately I'm not that experienced in this area.

I wrote a long answear that disapperad somewhere....so here is a shorter one...:

Prepare for cold weather in Norway any time of year! I assume you are equipped for hiking! If not, then I would say forget it and rather enjoy the very nice view you get just driving across the mountain!

Fanaraaken is not a big deal in good weather. It is steep, but never any where near scary or anything. How many hours depends on how fit you are of course...

Maybe someone else can give you a hint for a short walk for a few hours in the area?

A very easy hike: Park the car at Krossbu and walk the trail towards the glacier arm Bøverbrean, which is quite impressive with all its crevasses. But be warned: do not get too close! If you allow two hours for the hike, you will have ample time.
