Finse -> Geiterryggen

Hi there!

2 buddies and myself will be ariving at Finse this thursday (28.06-2007), and we have planned to walk from Finse to Geiterryggen on our first day on our 4-day trip. The following days will go through Aurlandsdalen. From what I can see at senorge.no there should be 2-4 meters of snow right now in the area between Finse and geiterryggen. Is it possible to walk from Finse to Geiterryggen on this thursday ? Do we really need to bring snowshoes ? We are in good physical shape, so we can overcome a hard walk, but is there simply too much snow right now making it imposible ?

I hope you can help with some good advice, we dont have all that much snow-trekking experince.

Hi, if you look at the web-cam in the rigth corner on this page, http://www.finse.com/ , you see Finse railway station and in the background you see how much snow there is on Finse.

Ye I know that webcam, and I have been looking at it. But it is very hard to see if there's too much snow to be walking to Geiteryggen.

I have no idea how much snow there is in this area now, but you should be able to get an answer from either Geiterygghytta or the Hotel at Finse...

There is bound to be some snow on the highest parts of the trail, but how much I don't know. Have walked there as late as september and still passed some snow. It is a nice hike though!

I was in this terrain two days ago.. It is a lot of snow in the mountains now, but the snow is hard, and it will be no problems for you to hike there without snowshoes..

just to specify: there is not snow everywhere on the route between finse and geiteryggen... I guess youll have to walk on snow 25% of the way..
